These particles are created as glaciers grind against the underlying bedrock, producing a fine sediment that is then suspended in the lake water. This suspended sediment scatters sunlight in such a way that longer (red and yellow) wavelengths are absorbed, while shorter (blue) wavelengths are reflected, giving the lake its distinctive azure hue.
