Saptkund Trek Details

Saptkund Trek Details

The Himalayas of Uttarakhand are filled with countless hidden trails, sacred lakes, and majestic peaks. These are among the yet-untouched treasures, one of which is the Saptkund Trek, an unique experience that few trekkers have the opportunity to undertake. Situated in the upper reaches of the Garhwal Himalayas, the trek is famous for its mystical beauty, alpine grasslands, and the sacred Saptkund Lakes (a set of seven lakes), which makes it one of India's most rewarding yet unexplored trekking adventures.

Location and Significance

The Saptkund Trek is in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, which is blessed with the soaring Himalayan mountains, glacial valleys, and sacred places. The term "Saptkund" is derived from seven unspoilt lakes lying at high altitude and each having high religious value to locals as well as providing breathtaking scenery of the surrounding mountains.

This hike is still fairly off the beaten track from well-visited trails such as Kedarkantha or Roopkund, so it's ideal for those looking for peace, raw adventure, and Himalayan solitude.

Saptkund Trek Itinerary (8 Days / 7 Nights)

Day 1: Rishikesh/Haridwar to Joshimath (250 km drive, 9–10 hrs)

Drive through the Ganga and Alaknanda rivers, crossing Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag en route to Joshimath. Overnight in guesthouse.

Day 2: Joshimath to Ghat – Ramni Village

A drive and hike to the lovely Himalayan village of Ramni set amidst terraced fields. Home stay with the locals.

Day 3: Ramni Village to Dhouldhari Campsite

Trekking through oak and rhododendron trees, and across streams, before finally reaching Dhouldhari meadow for the night's camping.

Day 4: Dhouldhari to Saptkund Base Camp

A steep climb brings you up above the treeline with imposing views of Himalayan ranges. Camp at the foot of Saptkund Lakes.

Day 5: Saptkund Lakes (Summit Day)

The most eagerly expected day of the trek! A strenuous walk brings you to the stunning seven glacial lakes of Saptkund, ringed by snow-peaked mountains. Explore and return to base camp.

Day 6: Base Camp to Dhouldhari

Descend back via alpine meadows and forests. Camp overnight at Dhouldhari.

Day 7: Dhouldhari to Ramni Village

Return trek to the village, cultural interaction and local cuisine.

Day 8: Ramni to Joshimath → Drive back to Rishikesh/Haridwar

Drive back with memories of one of Uttarakhand's most picturesque hidden treks.

Best Time to Visit Saptkund Trek

The best months are June to September, when the grass is green, flowers are in bloom, and lakes are pristine. After the monsoon, snow-clad peaks' vistas are all the more enchanting.

Level of Difficulty

The Saptkund Trek is graded Moderate to Difficult because of its steep ascents, isolated trails, and high altitude (over 4,000m). Experience in trekking is desirable.

Saptkund Trek Highlights

  • Seven sacred high-altitude lakes.
  • Breathtaking panorama of peaks such as Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, and Chaukhamba.
  • Lush alpine meadows and dense forest.
  • Traditional village homestay stay.
