Kuari Pass Trek Height

The Kuari Pass Trek, located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, reaches a maximum height of 3,650 meters (11,975 feet). This moderate trek is famous for its breathtaking panoramic views of some of the tallest Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi (7,816 m), Dronagiri, Kamet, Chaukhamba, and Hathi Ghoda Parvat.

The trek starts from Joshimath (1,875 meters) and gradually ascends through dense oak and rhododendron forests, vast meadows (bugyals), and charming villages. The height gain is steady, making it ideal for beginners and those looking to experience high-altitude trekking without extreme difficulty.

As trekkers approach Kuari Pass, they traverse gently through ridges and snow-covered paths (in winter) before reaching the highest point. The 360-degree Himalayan views from the pass are spectacular, offering an unforgettable sight of towering snow-capped peaks. The altitude of 3,650 meters is moderate compared to other treks, reducing the risk of acute mountain sickness (AMS), though acclimatization is still recommended.

Kuari Pass Winter Trek

 

The Kuari Pass Winter Trek in Uttarakhand, India, offers a captivating blend of adventure and natural beauty. Spanning approximately 65 kilometers, this moderate to difficult trek reaches an altitude of 4200 meters at the summit and 3800 meters at the pass.

Trekkers traverse through snow-laden oak and rhododendron forests, expansive meadows, and are rewarded with panoramic views of Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, and Kamet. The trail also takes you through picturesque and quaint villages enroute, a beautiful opportunity to mix with local culture and enjoy camping under the stars.

The trek starts from village Ghat, with the best trekking conditions from December to March, when the landscape is blanketed in pristine snow. This trek is ideal for both beginners and seasoned adventurers seeking a memorable winter experience in the Himalayas.

Kuari Pass Trek

 

The Kuari Pass Trek, also known as the "Lord Curzon Trail," is a stunning and relatively moderate trek located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Situated at an altitude of around 12,516 feet (3,815 meters), the trek offers breathtaking views of some of the most prominent Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Hathi-Ghoda, and Kamet. The trail is ideal for both beginners and experienced trekkers, thanks to its manageable difficulty and incredible scenic diversity.

Starting from the base village of Joshimath, the trek passes through dense oak, rhododendron, and pine forests, which are especially vibrant in the spring. It also includes charming hamlets, expansive meadows (locally known as bugyals), and ridge walks that offer panoramic mountain views.

One of the highlights of the trek is the Kuari Pass itself, a vantage point that provides a sweeping view of the snow-capped Himalayan range. The serene campsite at Auli, known for its ski slopes, adds to the experience, along with encounters with the local culture and lifestyle of the Garhwal region.

The trek is best undertaken from April to June or October to December, avoiding the monsoon months. With its mix of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and moderate challenge, the Kuari Pass Trek is a must-do for adventure enthusiasts.

Kuari Pass Trek Distance

  

The Kuari Pass trek is a popular and scenic trek in Uttarakhand, offering mesmerizing views of some of the highest Himalayan peaks. The total distance covered in this trek varies depending on the starting point,but with Mapping the Himalayas we cover the orginal trail also called the Lord Curzon trail,the trek spans around 55 kilometers, making it a moderate to difficult trek in terms of both distance and fitness. The trek is more long than hard so even beginners with good fitness can attempt this trek.

The trek typically starts from the village Ghat. From Ghat, trekkers are driven to the small village of selu bagar, which is the starting point of the actual trek. From here the walk starts and takes one to village Jhinji, roughly 16 kms walk.

Jhinjhi to Pana village next day is another 8 kms walk.The path is mostly easy, taking you through a lovely Rhododendron forest until you reach the village of Pana. 

Then from  Pana to Dakhwani is a 14 kms walk. The trail is easy to follow beyond the campsite. The path continues gently through the forest and opens up to a meadow called Sartoli. From Sartoli, it takes about half an hour to reach the campsite at Dhakwani. 

From Dakhwani one climbs to Kuari Pass (3800 mts), a 9 kms walk. On this day, it’s best to start early to witness a breathtaking view at the pass. The trail from Dakhwani keeps going uphill through the forest until we leave the tree-covered area. At this point, the path moves to the left side of the valley, just below the pass. It then zigzags its way up to the pass.

The pass provides an absolutely amazing view of the majestic Greater Himalayas. After reaching the pass the trail goes slightly up to a small peak (4265) where one can get an excellent view of the Dronagiri peak.

Following this, the trail goes downhill to a point where it splits into two paths, one leading to Tapovan and the other to Tali. Continue on the trail to Tali, which leads to a ridge with a temple and prayer flags. From here, you’ll be able to see the impressive Nanda Devi peak. The trail finally leads to the campsite at Tali.

From Tali walk to the village of Auli is around 8 kms, wehere the trek ends.
