The Kedartal Trek is perhaps the most adventurous and picturesque treks in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. Starting Point – Gangotri

The trail starts from Gangotri, a sacred town in Uttarakhand or the source of the River Ganga. From here, the track progresses slowly towards dense birch forests and the craggy Kedar Ganga gorge, putting every trekker's endurance to test.


Kedartal Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Rishikesh to Gangotri (248 km drive)

Scenic 7–8 hour road journey through the Ganga and Tehri Lake takes you to Gangotri. In the evening, one can pay a visit to the Gangotri Temple and absorb the spiritual atmosphere. Overnight hotel stay.


Day 2: Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak (13,220 ft)

A 7–8 km walk starts along the rocky Kedar Ganga gorge. The path is flanked by dense Bhojpatra (birch) forests. Overnight stay at Bhoj Kharak.


Day 3: Bhoj Kharak to Kedar Kharak (14,240 ft)

A short but steep 5 km walk to Kedar Kharak treats trekkers with panoramic views of Mt. Thalay Sagar and other Himalayan giants. Overnight stay at Kedar Kharak.


Day 4: Kedar Kharak to Kedartal (15,500 ft) & Return

An exciting 5 km hike takes us to the beautiful Kedartal Lake. The green waters mirror the white peaks surrounding it, a treat for camera enthusiasts. Visit, and then head back to Kedar Kharak for overnight stay.


Day 5: Kedar Kharak to Gangotri

Return to Gangotri after a 12 km hike. Dinner and overnight at hotel.


Day 6: Gangotri to Rishikesh (248 km drive)

Return drive to Rishikesh, concluding the trek.


Best Time for Kedartal Trek

  • Summer (May–June): Melting snow, providing clear skies and temperate conditions.
  • Autumn (September–October): Fresh post-monsoon air, with consistent weather and clear peaks visibility.


Difficulty Level

The Kedartal trek is not suitable for beginners. The path involves steep climbs, narrow rocky trails, and areas where rocks tumble down. In such high altitude, proper acclimatization is necessary to ward off Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS). Trekkers need to be physically conditioned and well-equipped with trekking equipment.


Tips for Trekkers

  1. Condition your endurance with cardio and strength exercises prior to the trek.
  2. Bring warm clothing, trekking sticks, and waterproof boots.
  3. Drink lots of water and climb in a gradual manner for suitable acclimatization.
  4. Trek always with seasoned guides or a professional trekking organization.
